NC warned to fix food stamp applications problems

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Federal regulators have warned North Carolina's health agency to address problems within its computer system to process food stamp applications or face monetary consequences.

A regional administrator for the Food and Nutrition Service wrote Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Aldona Wos (vahsh) last month saying her department had failed to provide all the information it sought in November. That included an action plan to reduce application and renewal delays that reached more than 20,000 households.

The administrator says federal funds to administer the program could soon be lost for the state without improvements.

DHHS offered a corrective action plan to regulators just before Christmas and said it was already being carried out. The department said problems with the NCFAST computer system have been fixed or are being addressed.
