CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Former Tar Heel basketball star P.J. Hairston is not currently enrolled as a student for the 2014 spring semester at the University of North Carolina.

The university confirmed the news Friday.

In December, the school said that it would not seek reinstatement of Hairston from  the NCAA after Hairston's run-ins with the law.

Authorities cited Hairston for traffic violations in May and June while driving a rental vehicle linked to a felon, raising the possibility of an improper benefits violation. During the June incident, Hairston  was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license at a checkpoint.

In a separate incident Hairston charged with driving 93 mph in a 65 mph zone.

"Unfortunately P.J. made a number of mistakes that placed his eligibility at risk and the University's joint review with the NCAA made it clear that seeking reinstatement for P.J. would not be possible," UNC AD Bubba Cunningham previously stated. "The university thanks him for his contributions to Carolina Basketball.

It appears from Hairston's Instagram page that the former Tar Heel has recently traveled to Chicago.
