Man found dead in parking lot of burning church identified

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Officials have identified the man whose body was found in the parking lot of a church that had caught fire early Saturday morning.

Firefighters discovered the body of Jason Terrell Martin in the parking lot of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, located at 12333 Bayleaf Church Road, around 2:38 a.m. Saturday.

Martin died from what appeared to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Martin's death is just one piece of a puzzle that began to unfold early Saturday morning when the Wake County Sheriff's Office said firefighters were dispatched to a home at 801 Carrington Drive.

Eighteen minutes later they responded to a fire alarm at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, where they found a vehicle had hit the front of the building and that the building was on fire.

"It was kind of shocking to see a SUV in the doorway," said Father Rob Staley.

Investigators believe the suicide and fire are all connected, and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is helping in the investigation.
