Deputies say man attacks New Bern bail bondsman with machete

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. - Pamlico County deputies say a man attacked a New Bern bail bondsman with a machete early Saturday morning shortly after getting out of jail.

Samuel Potter, 23, is at the center of the case. Investigators say bail bondsman Reggie Beasley posted a $213,000 bond to get Potter out of jail. Potter said he had money to repay Beasley located at his grandparent’s home on Scott Town Road outside Grantsboro.
When the two arrived there, deputies say Potter did not provide any money and instead attacked Beasley with a machete during an altercation. Beasley’s head and hand were injured. Deputies say Potter then grabbed a knife, with which he cut his own throat several times.

Potter’s grandparents called 911. First responders took both men to the hospital. Their conditions were not available.

Investigators said no new charges have been filed yet. Jail records show Potter had a court appearance Friday morning for other charges, including burning an unoccupied building, driving while license revoked, larceny of a firearm and misdemeanor escape a local jail. Jail workers would not elaborate on what Potter’s “escape” entailed.
