The Durham School Board met Tuesday to being its search to replace former Superintendent Eric Becoats.
During the afternoon meeting, the school board named acting Superintendent Hugh Osteen to the role of interim superintendent.
Osteen assumed the responsibilities of superintendent after Becoats resigned amid controversy Dec. 19.
The school board said it would like to make progress on a replacement by July 1.
The school board also instructed district staff to contact five to 10 search firms and request proposals for finding superintendent candidates.
Becoats contract ran through 2016 and he had spent three years as superintendent with an annual salary of more than $215,000. He will receive a one-time severance payment of just under $300,000 from the school system.
