Stephen Colbert rips UNC for latest academic scandal

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Comedian and satirist Stephen Colbert took the University of North Carolina to task in the wake of its newest academic scandal on Wednesday night's edition of "The Colbert Report."

UNC academic counselor Mary Willingham's comments from both her CNN and WNCN interviews were used in Colbert's "Sport Report."

He played CNN's clip where Willingham said, "I mean, we may as well just go over to Glenwood Elementary up the street and just let all the 4th graders in here."

Colbert mockingly asked, "Why? How fast can they run the 40? Can they really take a hit?"

The show then aired the portion of WNCN's phone interview with Willingham where she claims the scholarship agreement is often fraud.

Colbert then responded to the claim.

"Fraudulent? Come on. UNC is fulfilling its end of the bargain: you play football, in exchange you get a diploma," he cracked. "You don't know that's what it is because you can't read it, but trust them, it says that you can."

He went on to say that, "This whole, 'We owe students an education racket,' is a threat to something much more important than kids' futures: present-day money.

"College sports is an $8 billion industry roughly the size of the NFL and if college athletes learn math, they'll be able to calculate that their share of that money is zero percent," he joked.
