New Bern police investigate robbery and shooting

NEW BERN, N.C. -

New Bern police are investigating an armed robbery and shooting that happened within hours of each other.

Police say a man snatched a 67-year-old woman's pocketbook as she was walking from Christ Episcopal Church to her car.

It happened in the private parking lot of First Citizens Bank on Broad Street, where she had parked her car, at 9:30 PM on Friday.

Police say the woman fell to the ground when the man snatched her pocketbook, and he dragged her across the ground as she held on it.

The suspect ran away on foot.

The woman was treated and released at the hospital.

Just five hours later, a man was shot several times outside Nikki's Bar and Lounge in New Bern at the corner of Bern and Queen Streets, said Sgt. Ben Lewis.

Police say 39-year-old Telly Miles was shot in the arm and chest around 2:30 Saturday morning.

He was treated and released from the hospital.

Police say they did not have much information about what led up to the shooting because witnesses were not cooperative.

The armed robbery and shooting are not related. Police want anyone with information on either crime to call them.
