Bomb threat evacuates at least 40 homes near Hwy. 411 in Greenback
The bomb threat was reported for Viper Customs on Highway 411 in Maryville.
Traffic was stopped still on 411 for almost 3 hours while officials cleared the scene.
GREENBACK (WATE) - Two seemingly unrelated incidents had residents in Greenback on edge Saturday evening.
The first incident, a fire at WYKO Tire Industries at 6435 Highway 411 South, forced officials to evacuate nearby residents.
The second incident, a bomb threat at nearby Viper Customs, 5820 US Highway 411 South, was cause for officials to evacuate about 40 homes near Old Niles Ferry Road in Maryville.
The bomb threat was received around 5 p.m. according to the Blount County Sheriff's Department.
Officials with Blount County say Highway 411 South was closed for about 3 hours Saturday while the bomb threat was investigated. The Knoxville Bomb Squad was placed on standby in case a bomb was found.
Many were left to find shelter from the cold after being evacuated. The Red Cross set up a warming shelter for those evacuated at Springview Church at 4220 US Highway 411 South in Maryville.
Families gathered while authorities cleared the threat.
