Cold, snow moves across eastern Carolina

Posted: Updated:
Numerous schools are closed or delayed after cold and snow swept across eastern Carolina Tuesday night.

Snowfall amounts varied over the East.

Preliminary Snow Amounts:
Farmville- 1"; Stokes- 1.5" Williamston- 1", Kinston- Dusting, Snow Hill- 1/2", Tarboro- 2", Wilson- 2", Sharpsburg- 2.5", Sladesville- 1/2", Plymouth- 2", Greenville- 1.5"

The wind chill will play a large part of the forecast Wednesday. Winds are blustery out of the north/northwest at an average of about 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30-35 mph. This will bring the wind chill temperature down to the single digits to the lower teens. Gloves, hat and coats will be required to avoid frostbite.

Temperatures early Wednesday ranged from 8 degrees in Boone to 30 in Lumberton.

Schools were delayed in many school districts. Several districts canceled classes because of the weather.

The Pitt-Greenville Regional Airport experienced some delays. Crews worked overnight...plowing and clearing the runway. The first flight out had to be deiced.

The concern now turns to our area roadways. As the snow begins to melt, icy conditions are favorable. Officials says to be easy on your brakes and never accelerate or decelerate too quickly.  For a list of tips, click here

A winter weather advisory was in effect until noon in several counties, including Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, and Wilson.
