GUC warns customers of scam

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Greenville Utilities is warning customers about a possible scam targeting their bank accounts.

We’ve been hearing about similar scams recently, but now customers are reporting that the callers are fluent in Spanish,” said Scott Mullis, GUC’s Assistant Director of Customer Relations. “A number of our customers have reported receiving unsolicited phone calls from individuals claiming to be GUC employees. Most recently, scammers seem to be targeting the areas surrounding Belvoir Elementary School and claim that the customer's electric meter needs repair. It is also reported that a GUC phone number is appearing on caller ID.”

The utility provider says that the scammers are telling customers to purchase a prepaid debit card, then call back to make a payment. Customers have also been asked for their prepaid debit card’s receipt number and PIN number.

“Greenville Utilities is using several channels to educate customers about these types of scams,” said Mullis.  “We urge customers who are contacted by individuals claiming to represent GUC to listen for red flags, and hang up immediately if fraud is suspected.”

GUC adds it never asks or requires customers who have delinquent accounts or need utility repairs to purchase a prepaid debit card. Thos payments can be made online, by phone, automatic bank draft, mail or in person.

Customers with delinquent accounts receive notifications from GUC over the course of several weeks before electric service disconnection. They never get a single notification one hour before disconnection.

Customers who suspect or experience fraud should call local police, then call Greenville Utilities at 752-7166.
