SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - The northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 just north of Southern Pines were shut down by a fatal car wreck Wednesday night.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident that killed two people near Hylands Hills Golf Club at approximately 10:30 p.m.
According to the Fayetteville Observer newspaper, a man driving a 2003 Toyota traveled south in the northbound lane and collided head-on with a 1999 Toyota.
The 2003 Toyota caught fire with the driver inside, the newspaper said.
The driver of the 1999 Toyota, Jasmine Teyonna Wicker, 22, of Sanford, died at the scene.
The person killed in the other vehicle has not been identified.
