Scotty McCreery, the guitar-playing Garner product who rocketed to fame in 2011, earned $3 million last year – but only kept a fraction of it, according to Forbes.
Forbes ranked the highest-earning "American Idol" champions for 2013.
Carrie Underwood, who won "American Idol" in 2005, led the list with $31 million earned in 2013, giving her a whopping lead on any other former "Idol" champions.
Kelly Clarkson earned $7 million, Phillip Phillips $5 million, Adam Lambert $5 million and Chris Daughtry $4 million.
That put McCreery in sixth place among "Idol" winners – not bad for a performer who is still a student at N.C. State.
But McCreery told Forbes he only kept about a fifth of what he earned. Agents, attorneys – and, of course, taxes – take a chunk.
"It's depressing when you look at it, but I'm still making a good amount," he told Forbes. "I'm not in any way complaining … I'm doing a lot better than I was a few summers ago, living off the coin jar in my truck."
