UNC AD: New recruiting system is working but needs improvements

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

University of North Carolina Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham was part of a group aimed at examining the athlete experience at the school.

"I think we have outstanding students. I think our admissions process is outstanding. They do a great job both in the classroom and in their area of competition," Cunningham said.

But Cunningham said it could all be better.

The group looked at 22 points in all with number one being recruitment.

The freshman class on campus this year were the first to be recruited using a new tier system that ranks to at one, two or three, based on their academics.

Carolina coaches said that's already helped in choosing athletes that will be successful academically.

Women's soccer coach Anson Dorrance said he loses recruits to schools such as Stanford because players want the very best in academics.

On the other hand, football coaches said some colleges win over recruits by telling the players UNC is too tough  academically and they can't cut it.

The group did not discuss the controversial research of UNC reading specialist Mary Willingham. But Cunningham answered questions about the research after the meeting.

The group has been meeting since the fall and plans to issue a report about the Carolina student athlete experience at the end of the semester.

The University will then analyze it and determine how to make improvements.
