Ukrainian-Americans rally at the Capitol in Raleigh

Posted: Updated:

Ukrainian-Americans in Raleigh held a demonstration in downtown Raleigh Saturday showing support for those protesting in Kiev.

Demonstrators met at the Washington statue outside of the Capitol. Some at the rally said the current Ukrainian government is hurting civil liberties and democratic rights of its people. Demonstrators also said the government has enacted state violence against the Ukrainian people.

"Government they turned it into a dictatorship state where nobody has freedom of speech, freedom of expression. They just don't have human rights," said Ukrainian-American Iryna Rudko.

Many at the demonstration feel now is the act as they would like to eventually return to the Ukraine. But they would like to return to a "better" Ukraine.

No announcement was made about any future demonstrations.
