Governor against appealing NC abortion speech case

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory's office says he's against appealing a federal judge's decision last week invalidating part of a state law that would have required abortion providers to describe what is displayed on an ultrasound to every patient.

McCrory's office issued a statement Saturday quoting the Republican governor as saying he doesn't think costly and extended litigation is worthwhile to restore one provision of the law passed in 2011. McCrory says the heart of the legislation remains intact and patients will still be given information on abortion and ample time to make a decision.

Attorney General Roy Cooper has not said whether state attorneys would appeal the Jan. 17 ruling by federal Judge Catherine Eagles. Cooper is elected independently of McCrory and is a Democrat.
