PEGRAM, Tenn. -

A fire destroyed Pegram's only grocery store Saturday afternoon.

The fire started around 3 p.m. in the back of the Pegram Valu Plus Supermarket located in the 500 block of Highway 70.

The business is located in the middle of a strip mall and the flames quickly spread to neighboring businesses.

Crews from surrounding counties responded to the blaze as Pegram firefighters were busy with an earlier brush fire.

"When I first got here, I was one of the first on the scene, there was a loud explosion sound and we think it was the gas line that ruptured at that time," Pegram Mayor Charles Morehead told Nashville's News 2.

The grocery store is the only supermarket in the Cheatham County town and the loss is devastating.

"Pegram relies solely off of tax dollars to operate. We don't have a city property tax here in Pegram, so losing business cuts our income for the city," the mayor explained.

"I'm still shaking. It hasn't sunk in yet. It's hard to imagine because this is where I've been for the past six years, it's everything," said Rupaul Patel, whose family owns the business.

The community came out to lend a hand.

"Some of the residents helped hooking up the hoses and getting them started putting water on the fire," Mayor Morehead said.

"Everyone's either a friend or parents of friends so this is, it's very connected to us, so you know emotionally more than the money wise. It's everything that we have," Patel said with sadness.

No other details were immediately released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
