Rep. Renee Ellmers had some sharp words for possible challenger Clay Aiken in a recent interview with a Washington radio station.
Speaking Jan. 29 on WMAL, which is 105.9 FM in Washington, Ellmers said, "Apparently his performing career is not going so well. He's very bored."
She added, "As we know, he didn't fare all that well - he was runner-up [on American Idol]."
The host said, "You are saying that Clay Aiken couldn't even win on ‘American Idol,' his career is in the toilet, so that's why he is desperately trying to get to Congress?"
"Well you can throw in there that he also didn't win on ‘Celebrity Apprentice,'" Ellmers said, "so I guess the next step is Congress."
Aiken, who is from Raleigh, has not officially announced he will run for Ellmers' seat in the Second Congressional District, but sources have told The Associated Press and The Hill website that he is exploring a run.
Asheboro businessman Keith Criscoe, a former secretary of the North Carolina Department of Commerce, has announced he will run for the Democratic nomination.
