WARE SHOALS, S.C. -

Three people have been charged after a bleacher clearing fight that police say was sparked by a racial slur at a basketball game in Ware Shoals.

Authorities say there were several injuries reported as a result of the fight, including to two officers responding to the brawl.

It happened on Friday night after the Ware Shoals High School game against Tamassee-Salem High School.

According to a police report, an officer noticed things starting to become heated between two players of opposing teams during the game.

After the buzzer blew and the game ended, the team lined up to shake hands when a player from Tamassee-Salem said a racial slur to the Ware Shoals player. The Ware Shoals player then threw a punch, according to the report, prompting a bleacher clearing brawl.

Eventually, officials were able to break up the fight and clear the court, but police say the tension spilled over to the parking lot later that night.

At this point, three people have been charged. Several others are being looked at.

The investigation into the fight continues and additional charges are possible.

School district officials released a statement Monday stating they are embarrassed by the behavior that took place Friday.

"Administrators have responded according to guidelines set forth in our Student Code of Conduct and our Student Athletes’ Handbook," it reads.  "Consequences are harsh for fighting because we can’t and won’t tolerate that type of behavior."

Additional consequences are expected to be applied by the South Carolina High School League and local law enforcement.
