Suspect in Morhead City mobile home park death makes court appearance

Posted: Updated:
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - A Carteret County man made his first court appearance after deputies say he killed a man at his home.

Morehead City police arrested 26-year-old Stephen Hutson on Friday. He’s charged with one open count of murder for the death of 60-year-old Wilbur Wright Blackford.

Prosecutors say Hutson called 911 on February 1, telling the dispatcher he woke up and found Blackford dead on the floor.

Detectives now believe Hutson killed Blackford by hitting or punching Blackford in the head and breaking his ribs after an argument involving alcohol.

“They were friends, had known each other for a good period of time. It was not a situation where there strangers or some random act of violence or that his home was broken into,” explained Scott Thomas, Carteret County district attorney.

Hutson is being held in the Carteret County Jail under no bond. His next court date is March 14.
