Wesley Medical Center Raises Money for Relay For Life

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG -- Each year Relay for Life raises more than $400 million for the American Cancer Society. Employees at Wesley Medical Center are doing their part.

"It's been really good, a lot of fun," Wesley Employee Brigitte Lawson said about today's chili cook-off.  "People have taken a lot of time to taste and make comments, so it's been fun."

"We had some doctors to participate," Organizer Judy Gill explained.  "We had our employees and they made a Crockpot full of chili."

Participants who bought a ticket weren't just taste-tasters. They were also official judges for the event.  They raised about $500.

"It's all clear profit," Gill said.  "Our contestants make the chili. They provide the ingredients, and that's what we really appreciate."

For Lawson, the fundraiser hit close to home.

"My husband actually did a chili for the cook off because I'm a breast cancer survivor, and he is all about giving back," Lawson said.

Her husband was one of 14 contestants who judges said did an outstanding job.

"As a cancer survivor myself, it's very important for relay teams to make money because the money that's made is given back to the American Cancer Society, and it's used for research," Gill said.

Wesley's relay team's next fundraiser is a fashion show scheduled for next Tuesday at 12 and 5:30 p.m.
