Durham police continuing to face allegations of racial profiling

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Accusations of racism in the Durham Police Department was the topic tackled tonight by Durham residents from all over the city.

Dozens shared their personal experiences at a public forum in City Hall and explained why something needs to change.

The forum was conducted by the Durham Human Relations Commission and they got an earful Tuesday night.

Long-time resident Chris Tiffany said, "I've had hundreds of stops by the police and very often they make it clear that it's racial. You know, ‘You don't belong here boy – our job is throw blacks from white neighborhoods we're doing the same to you.'"

Tiffany said he was targeted because he lived in a predominantly black neighborhood.

Not everyone at the public forum agreed with the allegations.

Some told WNCN off-camera, "Crime happens, where it happens. Making it about race is taking it too far."

But for Robin Dean-Bell, she believes she was the target of racial profiling.

She said she met a friend at a local Burger King Jan. 3 to drop off some food she cooked. Seconds later as she was leaving, she was pulled over by the police.

The officer accused her of an illegal drug transaction.

The Durham Police Department responded to allegations of racism in a lengthy report last year, going over point by point on why they target specific areas of the community and explained why they're being unfairly accused of racism.
