LAMAR COUNTY, Miss. - Schools across Mississippi participated in a statewide tornado drill Wednesday as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

When the sirens ring, teachers and students at oak grove lower elementary stop what they're doing, to hit the floor for safety.

"We cover what they are suppose to do , here we are going to go that way they would be prepared," said Kelli Ruth, a third grade teacher. "My class has to go into the hallways so that they are away from windows and they crotch down in the tornado position to protect their heads."

All the teachers have an emergency kit that includes a safety vest and roll of their students.

"We count our students to make sure all are accounted for and we hold up a green card to show that everything is all clear with our class," Ruth said.

If someone is missing they use a red card to let those who are doing a hall sweep know.

"Maybe someone went to the bathroom or was in another class," she said.

Other staff members are responsible for checking bathrooms and other areas to make sure everyone is safe. Ruth said though today was a drill and the students did well, they do get frightened when the real thing happens.

"There was a time last year that the real thing happened and they got nervous and we just sit with them and tell them everything is okay," she said.

Wednesday's  tornado drill lasted only about three minutes. Principal Kristina Pollard said they are required to do emergency drills about twice a month.
