NC education board refuses to renew charters for 2 schools

Posted: Updated:

The North Carolina State Board of Education voted Thursday not to renew charters for schools in Orange and Carteret counties.

The Board did not renew charters for Pace Academy in Orange County and Coastal Academy for Science and Technology in Carteret County. It was a unanimous vote in both cases.

Pace Academy was started 10 years ago. The founders of the school said it was start to help those who always struggled academically.

Jane Miller, co-founder of Pace Academy, said Thursday night she was looking for ways to reverse the board's decision.

"We are fighting for the students at Pace and North Carolina," Miller said.

Pace Academy English teacher Charryse Frederick said the school serves the community in ways most schools don't.

"People learn in different ways and I don't feel like they're taking that into consideration," said Fredrick

"Talk to our students. Talk to our parents. Talk to our administrators again but more importantly, really hear the stories of our students and how they've been impacted by the vision of Jane Miller and Rhonda Franklin," Frederick said.

Miller said the board did not spend enough time looking at the facts surrounding Pace Academy.

Pace Academy officials said more than 50 percent of the student body have learning disorders. School officials said this makes it difficult to prove to the state the school can meet its one-size fits all academic standards.

"Everything's not perfect, and it won't ever be," Pace Academy Principal Rhonda Franklin said. "But we're perfect in our own way."

The students currently enrolled at Pace Academy will be able to finish the school year.
