USGA to honor Payne Stewart with highest honor

Posted: Updated:
PINEHURST, N.C. -

The United States Golf Association named the late Payne Stewart as recipient of the 2014 Bob Jones Award Friday in Pinehurst.

The Bob Jones Award is awarded annually and is the association's highest honor.  It recognizes an individual who demonstrates the spirit, personal character and respect for the game exhibited by Jones, winner of nine USGA championships, according to the USGA.

Other recipients of the award include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, President George H. W. Bush, Annika Sorenstam, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.

Stewart won 11 professional events during an 18-year PGA Tour career. He was killed in a plane accident in 1999 four months after his second U.S. Open victory.

"When golf fans think of Payne Stewart, at least in the terms of competitive setting, what happened on the 72nd hole, that was probably the most indelible memory in terms of competitive memories of Payne that we will have," said Executive Director of the USGA Mike Davis.

Stewart's wife and children will accept the award during a public ceremony June 10.
