Young people who "go the extra mile" honored in Greenville

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Boys &Girls Clubs of Eastern North Carolina honored their youths of the year during the “Going the Extra Mile” award dinner Friday night in Greenville.

9 your side's Morning Edition team, Andrea Blanford and Dontae Jones were there to introduce the Youth of the Year nominees.

At the end of each month club staff select a youth of the month.

These kids demonstrate exemplary character and often serve as leaders amongst their peers.

Then they have the chance to win Youth of The Year honors.

This year the east has chosen Messiah Hopkins of Beaufort County and Conrad Hunter from Pitt County.  

Donyell Jones, Vice President of Operations of Boys &Girls Clubs of Pitt, Lenoir, Greene counties, says these children are the cream of the crop.

He said, “ These people have done a tremendous job of showing service and leadership in several aspects of their lives, at the club, the community, at school, even at home.”

The boys will now go on to represent their clubs at the state-level.
