Duke-UNC game postponed because of snow

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Tonight's men's basketball game between the University of North Carolina and Duke University has been postponed due to inclement weather.

The game will be played Feb. 20. at 9 p.m., according to the University of North Carolina.

"Duke's bus is not able to get to their campus to pick up the team in time to be able to make the trip to Chapel Hill so we can't play this evening," said UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. "The safety of the teams and officials is the number one priority and this was the best decision to make at this time. Coach Williams, Coach Krzyzewski, [Duke athletics director] Kevin White and I will be on the phone with the ACC and make a decision as to when to play the game as soon as possible."

Earlier Wednesday, the ACC was confident it would be able to play the game at 9 p.m.

Karl Hicks, the ACC senior associate commissioner who oversees basketball, said the game officials and the key ESPN personnel were already in Chapel Hill for the 9 p.m. game.

"As of right now, it's a go," Hicks said.

Officials at Duke and UNC said Tuesday that they expected the game to be played, as long as the officials and both teams could safely make the game.

Just before 4 p.m., UNC said the game would still be on and that students who did not have tickets can show up at 7:30 p.m. at Entrance C for stand-by tickets.

But five fours before the game, traffic in the Triangle continued to be brutal. And while the drive from Durham to Chapel Hill is only eight miles, it would be a tough eight miles for the Duke bus to navigate.

ACC games are rarely postponed, because the league policy is to play if the two teams and game officials can make it to the arena safely.

In 2000, for example, heavy snow led UNC to allow anyone who could make it to the Smith Center to see the Maryland game for free.

Duke is 19-5 overall and 8-3 in ACC play. Carolina is 16-7 and 6-4.
