HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A neighborhood eyesore is not just a problem for residents, It's also a problem for realtors.

"Most people say they want to know what's around their home and what surrounds the area," said Woodland Realtor Lee Boyette said if an eyesore is near, it pushes potential buyers away.

"Vacant homes and vacant buildings in a residential neighborhood is not a good thing," he said. "The photos may look great online but when you get up to the home and they look next door and they go, we don't even need to get out at this house."

Rachel Lahasky, a Hattiesburg resident,  is in the market to buy a new home.

"We've  found a couple of houses we like, but unfortunately in this neighborhood particularly there are some of them that seem to be kind of neglected a bit," she said.

Boyette said  Lahasky is just one example of many.

"Me as a real estate broker, or even the seller who is trying to sell their property and they have something next door or behind them that's an eyesore, it's not much you can do," Boyette said.

"It makes us worry if we found a house across the street, or near one of these homes, is it going to bring down the property value of the house we like," Lahasky said.

"We take one home and then we compare it to other homes in the neighborhood and when other homes in the neighborhood has brought a lesser value, Boyette said. "That affects the value of the home we are appraising."
