Family of murdered Fort Bragg soldier asks for tips

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The Fayetteville Police Department held a press conference Monday in regard to the shooting death of a Special Forces soldier in October 2013.

Sean Wells, 35, was shot and killed at his home on Beaver Run Drive on Oct. 7, 2013, police said.

On Monday the wife, mother and sister of Wells joined police in asking for help in the case.

"I ask everybody, for the public to help us, to solve this case," said mother Maria Wells, who traveled from Nevada for the press conference. "I need to start grieving because my family cannot grieve until we find out what happened.

An investigation revealed that at least two men entered the home through the unlocked front door around 9:50 p.m.

Police Chief Harold Medlock said in October investigators did not know if the two men were invited into the home. One of the men forced Wells's wife Rocio and child into another room before the men shot and killed Wells. Police say one man had a rifle, and the other man had a handgun.

"It's really hard to remember that day," said Rocio Wells, referring to her preference not to talk about the details of what happened.

Rocio Wells ran from the home and called 911 after she heard her husband being shot.

Officers said a 2012 Toyota Camry was stolen from the home and was later recovered in the area of Rembrandt Drive near Rim Road. In addition to the stolen vehicle, the suspects also may have been operating a white pickup truck.

"I have been living with fear every single day, and sadness," Rocio Wells said.

Police said they have not been able to figure out why Wells was killed, although the shooters seemed to have some familiarity with the Wells home. Wells was in the Army for 15 years, the most recent seven as a Green Beret at Fort Bragg. Police said that meant Wells knew a lot of people, and investigators have talked to many people in their efforts to solved the case, which is Fayetteville's only unsolved murder of 2013.

"The bottom line is we want to know why, and who," said Wells's sister Cindy VanHoose who traveled from California for the press conference. "Hopefully if we find out who we can find out why."

Police will set up a command post and two road checkpoints on Tuesday in hopes of getting leads in the case. The command post will be at the Montibello shopping center on Cliffdale Road, not far from the neighborhood where the Wells family lived. The checkpoints will be on Beaver Run Drive where Wells lived and on Rembrandt Drive in the Sunset Mobile Home Park where the stolen car was found. The post and checkpoints will be set up between 6 and 8 p.m.
