Laurel Pharmacist Arrested

Posted: Updated:

LAUREL -- A pharmacist, his wife and several others are behind bars.  The Jones County Sheriff's Department, DEA, Pharmacy Board and MBN lead a 13 month investigation that put them there.

"This is a very deep case that is very cut and dry, and we have substantial evidence here," Sheriff Alex Hodge said.

Kyle Mauldin is the owner of 13th Avenue Pharmacy.  Both he and his wife Natalie were arrested.  They're charged with possession of a controlled substance. Kyle is charged with *sale* of a controlled substance as well.

DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Floyd Baker explained he was selling medication without prescriptions.

Hodge said the department executed several search warrants and arrested at least two more people.

Right now, the doors at 13th Avenue Pharmacy are locked.

"The DEA gives the license, and we also have the power to take it away," Group Supervisor Kenneth Miles said.  "Depending on the outcome of the case, he could lose his license."

Hodge said he knew Mauldin to be a prominent citizen, but the law is the law.

"Friendships and relations have no place," Hodge said. "It's business first. We're going to take care of business regardless of who it affects."

"Obviously his knowledge is a little stronger than the average person's knowledge about what prescription drugs can do, so it's a fault," Baker said.

Hodge said prescription medications are a serious problem when they're abused.

"Not only do you have problems with heroine and cocaine and drugs and alcohol and stuff like that, but prescription medication when it's abused is destroying families, our homes, our jobs, and it will not be tolerated in Jones County," he said.

Both Kyle and Natalie mauldin waved their right to an initial appearance.  Justice Court Judge Billie Graham set their bond via the phone at a combined $40,000.  They bonded out earlier today.
