5,000 gallons of fuel oil spill in Buncombe County

Posted: Updated:
CANDLER. N.C. - Authorities say 5,000 gallons of fuel oil have spilled from a tank in Buncombe County, polluting a nearby creek and river.

State officials said the spill at Harrison Construction Co. in Candler was first noticed around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The Division of Water Resources says the spill had already made it to Hominy Creek. Workers placed booms in the creek, but some of the oil made it into the French Broad River.

Officials aren't sure how much of the 5,000 gallons of fuel oil ended up in the water.

Investigators say the tank leaked after a coupling on a pipe failed and a valve on a containment basin was left open.

Officials say no fish kills have been reported, but they will continue to monitor the river for several days.
