Community comes together to raise money for Walmart shooting victim

GREENVILLE, N.C. - People in Greenville have not forgotten the day Lakim Faust allegedly shot four people near a Walmart in broad daylight.

On Sunday, hundreds of people showed their support for shooting victim Vernon Leggett, by holding a fundraiser. People showed up ready to enjoy music, a barbeque pig, participate in a drawing, and enjoy Leggett’s company to raise money for his recovery.

The fundraiser was held at the Players Retreat on Pactolus Highway in Greenville. Several bands donated playing time while people raised and donated money.

On June 21, 2013 Leggett was shot three times, once in the hip, once in the forehead, and once in the back all while trying to distract the shooter from shooting others. As a result of the shooting Leggett lost a kidney, a gall bladder, a spleen, and continues to recover from his injuries to this day.

For Leggett’s daughter, Amy Leggett, she says it’s nice to know people have not forgotten about the victims of the shooting.

"Everyday to change that bandage on his back, it's been just a constant reminder. It's nice that people have banded together to help and not forgotten about," said Amy.

All the money raised at Sunday’s fundraiser goes directly to Leggett
