CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A Durham man has been arrested and charged in connection with a home invasion at a home on Cotton Street in Chapel Hill.

Chapel Hill police responded to a report of a burglary in progress around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they saw the suspect running away.

Officers were able to apprehend the suspect, 21-year-old Maalik Antonio Burris, after a brief pursuit on foot.

An initial investigation revealed that the Burris entered the home through an unlocked or open window, and became involved in a scuffle with the residents. During the scuffle, the suspect fired a single shot from a handgun, which hit a wall.

No one was injured by the gunshot, although the residents suffered minor injuries from the scuffle. Burris was taken to UNC Hospitals with injuries, but they do not appear to be life-threatening.

Burris is charged with first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and injury to personal property.
