GATLINBURG (WATE) - Five Knoxville Catholic High School girl's basketball players were taken to the hospital Friday after a school bus accident in Gatlinburg.

Dispatchers say, around 6 p.m., the bus ran off Glades Road near Ogle Hills Road and landed on its side.

THP said the driver merged over to the right to allow a non-contact vehicle to pass going the opposite direction. The right front tire of the bus exited the roadway, causing the ground to give way and the bus went down the embankment, rolling into the creek.

Students were taken to LeConte Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries according to Knoxville Catholic Athletic Director Jason Surlas.

The team was headed to a game at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School. The game has been postponed until Saturday.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by THP.
