Father who survived fatal Ky. house fire holds Celebration of Life

Posted: Updated:

The father who lost his wife and eight of his nine children in a devastating Kentucky house fire held a Celebration of Life service Sunday in Greenville.

Chad Watson, 36, and his surviving child, 11-year-old Kylie Watson, were released from the hospital last week after sustaining injuries in the fire that killed the rest of their family in late January.

Watson held the event to share his appreciation to everyone who has lent support since the tragedy.

"Our community especially has opened their arms and just loved on our family and we couldn't be more thankful," he told the crowd.

In a time of great loss, loved ones and strangers alike came together to provide great comfort to the family during their time of need.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you. I cannot thank you enough. There are not words to express the gratitude I have for the support you have shown to me Kylie and our family," Watson said.

Family members said they have seen the best in human nature during the most difficult time.

First cousin Adam Brown noted he thinks what contributed to the outpouring of love and support was the shock of such a great loss.

"When people woke up that morning, and saw the sad news, and they heard about the loss of life, people had trouble wrapping their heads around the loss and the grief," Brown said.

He continued, "I think people realized they could put themselves in our shoes and say, ‘If that happened to us, what would we need.'"

They said Sunday's service was all about celebrating the lives of those they lost.
