WETS FM celebrates 40 years

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) - WETS FM is celebrating it’s 40 year anniversary. On Sunday February 24, 1974 WETS FM broadcast over the airwaves for the first time. During the first year the station was only on air from 10 a.m. to midnight.

Now WETS is a 24 hour operation, broadcasts in HD, and is an NPR and BBC affiliate sharing news from around the world.

News Channel 11 spoke with station Director Wayne Winkler and he said a lot has changed since 1974 but one important thing remains the same.

"The thing that we set out to do in 1974 that we're still doing is a mix of bringing the outside world to this region. By way of NPR and the BBC and news and information and entertainment from around the world," said Winkler.

Winkler said the unique partnership between WETS, ETSU and the stations listeners have allowed the station to see 40 years.
