Man arrested in shooting of 3-year-old; police say he helped deliver girlfriend's baby during snowstorm

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL - A 24-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection to the shooting of a 3-year-old in Birmingham.

The shooting happened Feb. 18, on the city’s east side in an apartment located in the 600 block of Brussels Circle.

The mother originally told police the gun belonged to a friend and the child found it on the sofa and accidentally shot himself in the abdomen. However, investigators are now saying that the child did not shoot himself.

Monday, Birmingham police announced the arrest of Byron Dobbins. Dobbins has been charged with 1st Degree Assault in the case. He is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

The Birmingham Police Department said via Twitter this afternoon that Dobbins helped delivered his girlfriend's baby during the major snow storm last month.

Dobbins was arrested after he was found getting into a vehicle with his girlfriend, Darshay Jones, and his mother Elisie Wilson.  Jones and Wilson have been charged with hindering prosecution.

The 3 year-old was one of two children shot on the same night. A 6-year-old accidentally shot himself in the foot while riding in a car. Police do not expect to file charges in the case involving the 6-year-old.

Both children are expected to recover.
