The Original Six of the1900s
Many are familiar withthe Original Nine but few know of the Original Six. In the modern era Savannahbecame the second city in Georgia to hire African American firemen.1963 wouldsee the hiring of six Savannah State College students:Purdy Bowers, TheodoreRivers, Lewis Oliver, Porter Screen, Cordell Heath, and Warnell Robinson. Allsix men were assigned to Station No. 4. That was the only station which hadsegregated facilities. In 2001, Paul Lewis Taylor would become the firstAfrican American Fire Chief of Savannah.
