Woman raises thousands to save dog found on highway

GREENVILLE, N.C. - A community plea for help went viral after a woman found a dog, barely alive, on the side of a highway. The east coast came together and raised thousands of dollars to keep him alive.

It's been about a month since the shar-pei/pit bull mix was found, nearly frozen to the ground, on Highway 264. Bonnie Scales was driving her morning commute to Wilson when she spotted the dog on side of the road. She turned around to save him and hasn't looked back.

"At that point, when you're in the moment and something means a lot to you, you do whatever it takes and figure it out as you go,” said Scales.

When she found the dog, now named Blue, on the highway, he was hypothermic and covered in snow. He had frostbite, broke his femur and pelvis and from the looks of it, was hit by a car.

"The vet told me the second I got him there to pretty much prepare myself and that it didn't look like he was going to make it just because he had been exposed for so long,” said Scales. “His body temperature was 12 degrees below normal."

His first vet bill was about $700. As the days went on and things were looking up for Blue, so was the cost to keep him alive.

at’s when Scales turned to social media and a fundraising website. She wanted to raise $2,500 to help with his medical bills, yet within three days, the campaign to save Blue raise more than anyone could imagine.

The nearly $6,500 was donated by people from up and down the east coast to folks in Greenville who heard the story and had to help.

Blue has several more weeks of recovery and once he's 100 percent, he'll be up for adoption.
