Data breach costs UNC nearly $80,000

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said a data breach has cost the school nearly $80,000.

In a release, the university said some electronic files in the Division of Finance and Administration became accessible on the Internet in 2013. The files contained information such as names and Social Security or Employee Tax Identification numbers, and in some cases, addresses and dates of birth.

The University said the external costscalculated to date include $32,000 for letters sent to notify people affected;$22,069 for credit monitoring; and $25,000 foroperation of the call center.

The files involved personal information about some current and former employees, vendors and students.

"Other than Google's activities described above, we have not been able to determine whether individual personal information was accessed by others or was misused as a result of this incident," Kevin Seitz, interim vice chancellor for finance and administration, said in the notification letter sent to the affected people's last known addresses.

As of Nov. 23, the records were no longer accessible on the Internet after Google complied with a request from the university.

The investigation into how the data was make accessible started last month and the university started notifying those affected Dec. 10.
