Raleigh wants public input on new Union Station design

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A public information session will be held Thursday night at CAM Raleigh on the planning and design of the Raleigh Union Station.

This will be the fourth in a series of information sessions on the Union Station project to solicit public input about the updated design.

There will be a brief presentation at 6 p.m. followed by a question and answer session from the Rail Division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The City, the Federal Railroad Administration, and NCDOT's Rail Division have been working together to develop the plan for the new Downtown rail station. The project will be completed in multiple phases.

Information about the Union Station Project

Completion of the first phase of the project will relocate passenger rail service from the existing Amtrak station on Cabarrus Street to the Dillon Supply Company Warehouse, also known as the Viaduct Building, located at 510 West Martin St. the new Raleigh Union Station will include connections to Capital Area Transit bus service, long-distance bus service, Amtrak, commuter rail and light rail, and facilities for taxis, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Funding for the first phase of the Raleigh Union Station project was provided by a series of grants and local and state contributions. 

Construction of the first phase is scheduled to begin in late this year or early 2015, with completion planned for 2017.
