We've seen a big increase in commercial robberies to start the year. The latest numbers released by Metro Police show incidents through February 15th. Commercial robberies have more than tripled through the same time last year. 19 so far - only 6 through February 15th of 2013.
The jumps have occurred throughout the jurisdiction. West Chatham has had three incidents, compared to one at the same time last year. Three also for the Downtown precinct compared to zero last year. Central has seen a huge jump to 17 reports from just nine at the same time last year. Southside also seeing a big increase seven as compared to one through February 15th last year. The only precinct that has fewer incidents reported this year is Islands.
WSAV Crime Expert Gerry Long says there are a number of factors that could contribute to the increase, "It in fact, could be triggered by a lot of different things - one, who recently has been released from prison you know - economics have a lot to do with it you know - what do people need the money for specifically? Are drugs having an impact on them?" And she recommends business owners meet with their precinct crime prevention officer to discuss security. As for customers who could find themselves targeted, she says, "It goes back to a very basic about personal safety that you really should have anything on your person that is worth risking your life over."
In other words - be compliant. As for business owners -- call your area precinct and set up an appointment with the Crime Prevention Officer to find out ways to improve security at your business.
