NC research think tank leader Coble to retire

Posted: Updated:

The leader of a nonpartisan think tank that writes in-depth about North Carolina policy issues and potential solutions is retiring after more than 30 years at the post.

North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research Executive Director Ran Coble announced Friday he's decided to step down in September. He joined the center as director in 1981 after working previously as a General Assembly researcher and state health agency attorney.

The privately-funded center has produced research on issues such as a state lottery and private-school vouchers and recommended policy changes carried out by the legislature or governors of both parties. The center proposed a sentencing policy commission in place today.

The center also produces a biennial citizens' guide to the General Assembly and effectiveness rankings of individual lobbyists and legislators.
