Williamston man arrested on attempted first degree murder charge

A Williamston man was arrested early Friday morning on multiple charges, including attempted First Degree Murder.

Williamston Police responded to a call at approximately 12:45 a.m. on the 400 block of Melbourne Avenue in reference to a shooting. Once on the scene, officers found the victim, Gregory Williams, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police say Williams was shot on the 200 block of Slade Street.

Kendall Gonzalez was immediately identified as the shooter. While looking for Gonzalez, his vehicle was fond on Willow Drive. Officers tried to stop Gonzalez’s vehicle but he fled and led officers on a high speed chase.

Officers pursued Gonzalez to Martin General Hospital where he hit a parked vehicle. Gonzalez then ran into the emergency room armed with a handgun. Williamston Police Officers and Martin County Sheriff’s Deputies quickly apprehended Gonzalez without any further injury.

Gonzalez is charged with one count of Attempted First Degree Murder, one) count of Second Degree Burglary, one count of Assault by Pointing a Gun, three counts of First Degree Kidnapping, six counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official, eight counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon on Emergency Personnel, one count of Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest, one count of Failure to Heed Lights and Siren, and one count of Careless and Reckless Driving to Endanger.

Gonzalez is being held in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a one million dollar bond. His pending court date is March 26 in Martin County District Court.
