RALEIGH, N.C. -

The Raleigh doctor convicted of killing a ballerina in September of 2009 has been released from the Wake County Correctional Center.

In March 2011, Dr. Raymond Cook, a plastic surgeon, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, felony death by motor vehicle and driving while impaired in a crash that killed 20-year-old Elena Shapiro.

Shapiro was killed Sept. 11, 2009.

Cook was facing 36 months to 53 months behind bars, which is the maximum sentence allowed by law. Cook was sentenced based on the death by motor vehicle charge.

Cook surrendered his medical license after the crash.
