State health care enrollment numbers rank among the best

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - With the health care enrollment deadline of March 31st quickly approaching, North Carolina enrollment numbers are rising.

As of February 1st 160,161 North Carolina residents had signed up for health insurance. That ranks the state 5th in the nation.

Get Covered America is a non-profit organization that helps people find coverage.

"We're really just about talking to people and letting them know that they can get health insurance and they might qualify for financial help to pay for it," said Sorien Schmidt, the North Carolina Director of Get Covered America.

Schmidt says that nearly 90 percent of those enrolled in the state have received financial help.

One of those people is Lorenzo Hernandez.

"If I didn't have this help from the government, it would be about close to $600 a month. And this is a great help for me," Hernandez said.

Although state numbers are increasing, Schmidt says that only 25 percent of those enrolled are 35 years old or younger.

"Young people, we thought, would be waiting until closer to the deadline," Schmidt said. "And since we had the slow start with the computer problems at the beginning, I don't think it's that surprising."

If you still need to enroll and would like to set up a free appointment with Get Covered America, call their hotline number at 855-733-3711, or visit their website.

You can also visit the national health care website or call the 24 hour hotline at 1-800-318-2596.

There are enrollment events every Thursday at Pitt Community College from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
