1 dead, 1 injured after SUV strikes tree in Johnston Co.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a man in his 20s died and his passenger sustained injuries when the SUV his was driving ran off the road and struck a tree near Benson Saturday morning.

Authorities said Lucas Daniel Currin of Benson was driving south on Old Fairgrounds Road outside Benson around 3 a.m. when he drifted center of the line and went off the road. The vehicle hit a ditch, went across a driveway before hitting a pine tree head on, authorities said.

A passerby stopped to help as the passenger, Jessica Leigh Coats, was able to get out of the vehicle, authorities said. Currin was trapped in the vehicle, authorities said.

Coats was transported to the hospital with injuries to her arm, leg and possible internal injuries, the Highway Patrol said.

Currin was pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and are awaiting toxicology reports. Authorities said speed was not a factor in the accident.
