Dress for Success at Women in Business Conference

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - 9 On Your Side is saluting National Women's History Month by saluting the ladies making something out of their lives.

We partnered with the Pitt County Chamber of Commerce for the Women In Business Conference Friday at Pitt Community College.

Our Angela Green served as the emcee of the event, which brought together a number of keynote speakers with various messages of empowerment to women reaching for success in their lives.
Nearly a hundred women came out and for many they say they walked away with more than just stories of other women's success.

"On a personal level, it's a good reminder that no matter where you are in your career in your life there is still more to do,” said Denise Hockaday. “We've deferred dreams and we need to dust those off and kind of put those in action."

Part of today's event collected business attire for women trying to get back into the workforce.

9 On Your Side's Dress For Success program took up donations of gently used business clothes to benefit the STRIVE program.

--- Original Story ---

WNCT-TV 9 On Your Side in conjunction with The 5th Annual Eastern North Carolina Women in Business Conference and the Pitt County Chamber of Commerce proudly present “Dress for Success”.

Women attending The 5th Annual Eastern North Carolina Women in Business Conference at the Goess Student Center on Pitt Community College campus are encouraged to bring a donation of new or gently used business attire.

The donation will go to 9 On Your Side’s Dress for Success program with the clothes being donated to the Strive Program in an effort to help them with getting women back to work.

STRIVE’s mission is to help men and women achieve financial independence, to assist others in adopting the STRIVE model, and to encourage effective employment policies and practices nationwide.  STRIVE helps people with job skills and training.

On Monday, 9 On Your Side introduced you to Farmville mayor Etsil Mason who explained there are many avenues to accomplishments.

Before she became mayor, Mason was a licensed general contractor, who couldn't get her first loan because she was a woman.

She didn't let that stop her from succeeding. And that's the message she wants women to hear.

“Going to a conference helps you see other people and measure your own life and kind of step back a little bit and makes you realize what potential may be left in you," she said.

On Tuesday, we introduced Dr. Susan Bane.

A former writer & OB/GYN, Dr. Bane has dozens of stories to share from her time of helping families embark on new journeys.

Her personal story is one of triumph. A shoulder injury forced her to walk away from a career of bringing new lives into the world.

Her message is one that proves you don't always have to be perfect in everything that you do.

On Wednesday, we introduced Bethany Bradsher.

A local writer and author, her message is as much for women not in business as those who are.

"It seems like there are so many ways to be in business, so whatever that means, there are all kinds of ways that women I know are trying to make a living to broaden their horizons professionally and learn new things," she said.

Right now, the Dress For Success initiative of 9 On Your Side will help women get into the job world.  Donate your gently used or new business clothes at the conference on Thursday.  The clothes will go to those women in the STRIVE program.
