ERWIN, TN (WJHL) -

An Erwin Police Officer was listed in serious condition in a local hospital Monday, after his vehicle crashed Sunday while he attempted to avoid a deer in the road.

According to the Erwin TN Police Department Facebook page, Officer Gregg Copp reportedly crashed his SUV Sunday while on duty, after he attempted to avoid hitting a deer off of Temple Hill Road just before midnight.

Copp’s SUV reportedly went down an embankment to miss hitting the deer, but did clip the deer.

He was taken to Johnson City Medical Center and is currently in the intensive care unit for treatment of several injuries.

News Channel 11’s Mike Lamia said reports are optimistic about Copp making a full recovery.

Copp reportedly joined the EPD in January.
