Hoffman nabs pair of honors after 14 strikeout performance

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina junior Jeff Hoffman picked up a pair of honors Monday afternoon as he was named one of five Louisville Slugger National Players-of-the-Week by Collegiate Baseball and Conference USA Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week.

The right-hander continued his stellar season over the weekend striking out a career-best 14 batters against future C-USA member Western Kentucky in the 11th Annual Keith LeClair Classic opener Friday night. Hoffman allowed one run (unearned) on five hits with one walk over eight innings in a game the Pirates won in 10 innings, 2-1.

Hoffman, whose 14 punch-outs established a new LeClair Classic record previously held by Andrew Miller (UNC), retired nine batters swinging (five looking). He came within one strikeout of tying Zach Woods' Clark-LeClair Stadium record of 15, punching out multiple batters in five of eight innings he worked. The Latham, N.Y. native retired the side via strikeouts in the first and fifth innings, while also recording at least one punch-out in seven of eight frames (multiple in five innings). He registered four ground ball and five fly ball outs to go with one double play.

This is Hoffman's third career C-USA weekly honor and East Carolina's first National Player-of-the-Week accolade since Zach Woods (2010) when he fanned 15 batters against Elon in an 8-0 victory.

Hoffman and the Pirates will hit the road for a midweek contest at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, Mar. 5 before returning home to open Conference USA action against Marshall (Mar. 7-9).
