Ladybird, one of the African elephants at The Greenville Zoo, has passed.
The Greenville Zoo reports the elephant was found lying down in her barn late Monday afternoon and staff couldn't get the animal to stand up again.
Ladybird was 44 years old, which is considered to be elderly for an elephant according to zoo staff. It was determined that euthanasia was the best course of action.
Ladybird was monitored closely over the last month after a recent episode of colic or abdominal pain as a result of the change in weather according to the zoo.
"Despite being a geriatric elephant, she was doing well for her age until a couple of months ago when she began showing signs of age-related medical issues, including arthritis and other joint-related issues," said Dr. Heather Miller, Greenville Zoo Deputy Administrator for Animal Health in a written statement.

A team of pathologists from the University of Georgia Exotic Animal and Pathology Service will perform a necropsy, which is required for any animal that passes away at the zoo.
Results are expected in the next two or three weeks.
Ladybird came to the Greenville Zoo in 2006.
